Germany Posts Q1 Growth

Author: Mary Levien/ Date: May - 13 - 2012

With the Greek drama playing out on centre-stage right now as last-ditch efforts are made to avert the need for a second general election which could give a mandate to the left to tear up the austerity package that secured Greece its second EU/IMF loan, it is timely to remember that the Greek economy is not in the top tier of EU economies. Germany, on the other hand, is the most important economy, by size, within the EU and the smaller Eurozone group.

Germany ended 2011 with an economic contraction of 0.2%; its first period of economic contraction since 2009. Amongst other things, the on-going sovereign debt crisis, generally weak economic data and poor prospects for employment both in Europe and within the global economy, had led to fears that 2012 would be a very difficult year. So far, economic indicators for 2012 have been mixed. The band aid that had been placed on the European sovereign debt crisis with Greece’s second bailout has been ripped off by the inconclusive Greek election and the success of parties strongly opposed to austerity measures. Is Germany’s debt position worse than United States?

Author: Savannah Bright/ Date: May - 12 - 2012

It is widely believed that Germany’s fiscal position is the strongest in Europe and that it is the pillar of the Euro-zone.

Then something unexpected happened last week.

The German government could not borrow all the money it needed! Well, not at the currently low interest rates, at least. What if the financial market realizes that Germany’s fiscal position is actually worse than the United States? Kyle Bass, the manager of a hedge fund called Hayman Capital,  who made millions by gambling against sub-prime mortgage bond market, explains…

Retirement 101: An overview of different retirement plans

Author: Mary Levien/ Date: May - 9 - 2012

A retirement plan is an investment account designed to encourage you to save money for retirement by providing special tax benefits. The plans are open only to account owners (called participants) who meet certain qualifications based on income and other factors. There are dozens of types of retirement plans available to US workers but over the next few weeks, I’ll cover:

  • Traditional Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs)
  • Roth IRAs
  • 401(k)s
  • 403(b)s
  • 457(b)s
  • SEP IRAs
  • SIMPLE IRAs

Retirement plan accounts are like regular investment accounts, but with a few twists. Here’s how they work:

  1. Set up an account: You establish a retirement plan account through your employer, a bank, a financial services firm, or an … my personal favorite … a discount online brokerage like Scottrade, E*Trade, or Charles Schwab’s optionesXpress.
  2. Contribute money to the account: Depending on the plan, you can contribute by deducting money from your paycheck at each pay period or by depositing money from your savings into your retirement account whenever you choose. The amoun

How An Investor’s Gain Can Be Your Loss

Author: Alexander Littlejohn/ Date: May - 5 - 2012

In his new book, Unintended Consequences: Why Everything You’ve Been Told About the Economy Is Wrong, Mitt Romney’s former business partner Ed Conard claims that for each dollar of wealth pulled in by investors, society gets up to $20. I took issue with this claim, saying that the ratio is closer to 5 to 1. However even this lower number caught many by surprise, thinking it to be an endorsement of Conard’s view of the economy, albeit in a bit toned down form. It’s worth clarifying what is at issue.

First, the 5 to 1 number is simply a reference to the ratio of labor income to capital income (after taxes). For example, in 2011 after-tax corporate profits were just under $1.1 trillion, while labor compensation was over $5 trillion. If we add the corporate tax revenue to the labor income side, the total is more than $5.5 trillion. The take-away from this is that when companies have productive investment and it actually leads to economic growth, then everyone can benefit.

Even when we talk about productive investment, much of the individual investors’ gain is at the expense of other investors.

Best Buy closings: steep cuts. More to come?

Author: Savannah Bright/ Date: April - 14 - 2012

MINNEAPOLIS – Faced with a stubborn slide in sales at its U.S. stores, Best Buy Co. Inc. on Thursday announced its steepest round of cuts: closure of 50 big box stores and elimination of 400 positions at its corporate headquarters in Richfield, Minn. Officials did not reveal which stores are on the chopping block.

The company also didn’t disclose how many store employees will lose their jobs, but that number will likely be in the thousands since each store employs roughly 100 workers, including so-called Blue Shirts and Geek Squad technicians.

Best Buy, once known as the undisputed discount king of consumer electronics, has been struggling to find its place in a world dominated by flashy high-end brand temples like Apple Stores and low-cost Internet retailers like Amazon. Customers have been increasingly migrating online where they often find better deals, forcing Best Buy to figure out a reason why shoppers would need to visit an actual store.

Last year, Best Buy lost a staggering $1.2 billion as it deeply discounted merchandise to keep pace with rivals Amazon and Wal-Mart.

All in all, the company hopes Best Buy closings will save $800 million over the next three years, savings the company plans to use to fund its new “connected” store remodels, international expansion and digital services.

Senator By Day, Telemarketer By Night

Author: Alexander Littlejohn/ Date: April - 11 - 2012

We think of lawmakers having one job: making laws. But there’s a second job most lawmakers have to do. And it’s a big job.

“I think most Americans would be shocked — not surprised, but shocked — if they knew how much time a United States senator spends raising money,” says Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin. “And how much time we spend talking about raising money, and thinking about raising money, and planning to raise money.”

And this second job — the raising-money job — doesn’t happen in the nice congressional offices, with the rugs on the floor and landscape paintings on the wall. That would be against the rules.

So senators and congressmen go across the street to private rooms in nongovernmental buildings, where they make call after call, asking people for money.

In other words, most of our lawmakers are moonlighting as telemarketers.

“If you walked in there, you would say, ‘Boy, this is the about the worst looking, most abusive looking call center situation I’ve seen in my life,’” says Rep. Peter D
