Don’t Count Your Chickens Until They Hatch

Author: Alexander Littlejohn/ Date: April - 10 - 2011

Recently, the foxes who currently are in command of most of the attorney general positions of the United Chicken States of America, caught some of their kin folk, who own most of the mortgages on the chicken huts across the land, falsifying mortgage documents to kick the chickens out of their protected huts in the chicken houses. The ruling red foxes are currently trying to decide what to do to their lesser cousins, the black foxes in the mortgage loan industry, for their transgressions of violating the law. Current rumors has it that the red foxes will slap the hands of their cousins, then allow them to go about their business as usual.

In a nutshell, what the red foxes are proposing does not include tough new rules to end the abuses, ramped up loan modifications, or penalties for past violations. Instead, the red foxes are suggesting the black foxes should improve management in their foreclosure process and include reforms to insure their staff are better trained. The black foxes are also to adhere to some common sense, things like stopping foreclosure while a chicken is trying to negotiate a modification of their existing loan or providing a phone service that would allow the chickens to talk to the fox when they are delinquent in their payments. But the full meaning of the new terms is that the black foxes, without admitting or denying any wrongdoing, must now abide by the existing laws and current contracts.

To clear up their past transgressions, the black foxes are required to hire independent consultants, probably silver or gray foxes, to check a sample of recent foreclosures for improper evictions and impermissible fees. The silver and gray foxes will be required to report back the results to their employers who will then be required to make good financially for their shortcomings as they think appropriate. So, the black foxes get to decide what is appropriate for their transgression, an interesting new concept, especially for us chickens.

For you chickens that are already aghast, things could get worse. Chicken advocates have warned that the black foxes may try to pre-empt those hideous actions by the red foxes to get them to regulate themselves, and they may try to by pass the laws of the states to correct and punish foreclosure abuses. The black foxes may also argue that the legal agreements made to purchase the huts supersedes any additional rules laid down by the new Chicken Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. They say any help to the chicken borrowers would be excessive regulation.

Some may argue the head rooster in Washington, Leghorn Berrick, will put an end to all the nonsense, but ever sense Leghorn made a deal with the outgoing silver fox leader, Bushel Fox, to carry on business as usual, us chickens might be wise to not count all our chickens until they hatch.

Unless we chickens forget, it was Bushel Fox who bailed out the black foxes to subsidize bonuses, elite vacations, and obscene profits for the vixens of the financial world. I am not sure we can count on Leghorn and his gangly collection of congressional animals who are prone to trough meets with their fellow law makers. Once on the trough and after tasting the scrumptious legs of plump chickens which can no longer lay enough eggs to pay for their huts, I am not sure we can count on the gangly feds to do what is right about foreclosures either.
The moral of this story is that when chickens have lost the ability lay enough eggs to pay for their part of the hen house, they shouldnt wait or rely on the foxes to help them keep their hut, nor should they ever count their chickens until they hatch.
